The Historic Warehouse District: near East side, near West side

Northwest of Public Square, the historic warehouse district begins on Saint Clair Avenue and West 6th street, and spreads on both the East and the West banks of the river. This area is a testament to the beginning of Cleveland’s industrial times. It launched the city’s economy and forged its identity as an industrial city. Immigrants who worked in the factories and warehouses around populated this area, known as the Flats. Many houses and buildings where the immigrants used to live have been destroyed since, but there are still a few industries and shipping companies in the area.

This neighborhood has undergone a great deal of change. Along the Cuyahoga River, this district provides abundant nightlife, as the old warehouses have been transformed into restaurants, clubs as well as apartments and loft spaces. It hosts one of Cleveland’s major entertainment complex.  It is one of the liveliest areas in Cleveland.

The revitalized Warehouse District

The area is accessible by boat on the river. Boat taxi services are available. In the summer, the jet-ski rental places are open and that is another original way to visit the riverbanks. There are also daylight or nighttime mini-cruises on the river and the lake departing from the west side of the flats. That is the best way to get a breathtaking view of the illuminated city at night.

The Flats and Warehouse Districts

A renovation plan is underway to attract new and diverse businesses to the area while preserving its historic feel.
